'Nick Clegg' sniffs out dog treats in people's pockets

A canine named after Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg is being cared for by the Dogs Trust.

If someone has dog treats in their pockets, it is likely Nick Clegg will sniff them out.

The canine, named after the Liberal Democrat leader, is currently living at the Dogs Trust's Harefield Rehoming Centre.

They said Clegg loves tucking into dog food and will do everything possible to earn a dog treat.

In the interests of fairness, the charity has also given two other animals the same names as the leaders of the other two main parties battling it out ahead of the May 6th 2010 general election.

Six-month-old Blue Merle Collie Cameron has boundless energy and is an affectionate animal.

A feisty Red Boxer named after prime minster Gordon Brown, meanwhile, "always wants to be top dog".

Although naming the animals after the politicians is a bit of fun, there is a serious reason behind it, explained centre manager Richard Moore.

"The trio recently came to Dogs Trust Harefield for rehoming and we hope that by canvassing on their behalf we will soon be able to find all three permanent homes," he remarked.

Around 16,000 animals are cared for at 17 of the non-profit body's centres around the UK - where the canines are given all the dog treats and dog food they need.
