Healthy dog food for overweight pet

One overweight animal is being weaned on to a diet of healthy dog food.
A border collier that is three times her ideal weight is being weaned on to healthy dog food to help her get back down to a normal size. The seven-year-old dog, named Cassie, tips the scales at some 58 kg. A healthy weight for a collie is between 18 kg and 20 kg.
A diet of sweets, crisps and fish and chips had been given to the animal before she was taken in at the Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre in Kenilworth, Warwickshire.
As well as healthy dog food, the animal is being taken for short walks by staff at the centre. At the moment, Cassie can only manage to go for three minutes before she gets too out of breath to carry on.
Sandra Wilson, manager at the Kenilworth home, said: "Unfortunately, when owners treat their pets as if they were humans and feed them the wrong food, they're simply killing them with kindness."
Anyone with their own overweight dog should ensure they feed the animal the right amount of healthy dog food rather than too many treats. Speaking to a vet before embarking on an exercise regime may also be advised.
