Cat's first days in new home 'are critical'

A new cat need to be treated with care, as their first days in a new home are especially important when it comes to ensuring it settles in.
The first few days of a cat's arrival in its new home are crucial for how it adapts to its surroundings.Deputy manager of Cats.org.uk's National Cat Adoption Centre in Sussex Tania Marsh explained owners need to take care with how they integrate the cat into their household, particularly if they have children.
People should swap the cat bedding or dog bedding used by their existing pets to help their new arrival get used to the scent, before introducing the animals to each other in a large room so they can "stay a safe distance" apart.
Kids should be shown the "correct way to handle and stroke the cat" so it does not become angry or frightened, Ms Marsh added.
Cat toys can help both kittens and adult cats become comfortable in their new surroundings and these may be ideal for keeping the pet entertained during its first days in its new home, as Ms Marsh recommended they are kept in a separate room or area before being given access to the whole house.
