Giant hairball removed from cat's stomach
A cat that was thought to be suffering from a stomach tumour has had an operation to remove a giant hairball.
A hairball the size of two cricket balls that vets thought was a tumour has been removed from a cat.The clump of hair, weighing 215g, almost killed the ginger longhair cat as it grew to fill its entire stomach, making her unable to eat cat food.
According to the Daily Mail, David Fennell of Cromwell Vet Group in Huntingdon noted the cat, called Gemma, had "not eaten for days" as a result of the hairball.
"We could feel a large mass in her abdomen and thought it must be a tumour because it was so big," he remarked.
Hairballs build up when cats swallow their hair during grooming and regular use of a cat comb to remove excess hair could prevent them from forming.
Mr Fennell noted the pets usually cough the balls up and he was not able to work out why Gemma had not been doing so.
