Rice 'a great dog food ingredient'

Television vet Joe Inglis has explained the benefits of using rice in dog food.
Rice is a great source of carbohydrate energy for dogs and is a much better option than wheat and maize, one celebrity vet as argued.Joe Inglis, who developed the Vets' Kitchen range of pet foods, argued the ingredient is not linked to "allergies and intolerances" in the same way that wheat and maize can be.
He argued that while rice is not necessarily something dogs would eat in the wild it is a "very healthy ingredient", adding the notion that pets should eat what is seen as their traditional diet is flawed.
"Just because dogs didn't eat rice a thousand years ago doesn't necessarily mean it is not a good diet for them," he remarked, noting the same theory applies to humans.
Vets' Kitchen food is available for puppies, adults and senior dogs and Mr Inglis added it has been developed using his experience of joint problems, poor nutrition and digestive problems in dogs, which can be caused by a poor-quality diet.
