Salmon a great source of protein for dogs

Lots of dogs love fish and salmon is a great source of high-quality protein.

Salmon is full of healthy protein and is beneficial to dogs because it can be easily digested.

Joe Inglis, who uses the fish in some of his Vet's Kitchen range of dog food, said it is similar to chicken and both foods have a thorough makeup of amino acids to muscle pound in dogs and cats.

This means they are easier for pets' bodies to break down and turn into protein.

"Whereas, if you feed them something like beef there is a lot more work required and a lot more waste product and that means it puts more strain on the kidneys and it is more wasteful," Mr Inlgis explained.

Another benefit of chicken and salmon is they are unlikely to cause allergies in pets and reduce the chances of intolerance due to the high quality of the proteins they contain.

Lots of animals also prefer the taste of fish, so the products give owners the chance to feed their pets something they really love.

Vet's Kitchen salmon and brown rice dog food could be the perfect choice for some dogs and its added omega 3 oils mean it will help to keep skin and coats healthy, as well as keep pets mentally alert.

This also contains added taurine to keep hearts healthy and chondroitin to maintain healthy joints as dogs get older.

Owners can purchase specialist joint supplements, which Mr Inlgis described as "innovative" products because they make it easier for people to give their pets extra nutrients.

Some animals will refuse tablets, but the Vet's Kitchen supplements are gel-like liquids that are added to dog food like a sauce. The expert said these are "really effective" and provide animals with key, high-quality extra nutrients like glucosamine and oat groats.

Alternatively, some animals might prefer Vet's Kitchen salmon and potato dog food. Mr Inglis said potato is a great source of carbohydrate and offers owners an alternative if their pets do not get on well with the brown rice food.
