A healthy dog is a happy dog but what are the things you should be doing to ensure the health of your best friend? We have listed a top 10 of what we think are the best ways to help keep your pet dog happy and fit.
- First, don't get drawn into fad diets for your dog as these might not give your dog the nutrition it needs depriving it of essential vitamins and minerals
- A dogs diet should be low in fat and high in fibre. Ask your vet to prescribe specialist dog food if necessary.
- Before doing anything ask your vet to check your dogs health. If he/she is losing or gaining weight there may be underlying health problems.
- Training treats add calories so incorporate them into your dogs daily allowance. Check with your vet that treats such as fruit or vegetables are appropriate/
- Don't make drastic changes to your pets food and exercise regime. Introduce a new diet for your dog and fitness routines gradually.
- Several walks a day is better than one long excercise session
- Like people, the time frame and amount of weight you expect your dog to lose should be realistic. Slow and steady is better than rapid weight loss.
- Encouraging your dog to play fetch, hide and seek, catching a frisbee and more walking are all great ways for him/her to burn calories
- Think of other ways to reward your pet other than dog treats. He/she will appreciate verbal praise, dog toys and play just as much.
- Remember that as your dog grows older he/she may slow down and exercise less. Adjusting calorie intake will balance things out and help prevent weight gain.
